Sunny In May

Where can I go on holiday in mid May that doesn't require a long flight (I have a fear of flying) yet can virtually be guaranteed sunshine and a lovely hotel with a fab swimming pool....and no kids? Recommendations please

Do you mean warm as well as sunny? All the Balearics, Spain (2 hrs flight), Greece, Cyprus (little longer flights) most of the Med resorts are likely to be sunny but not necessarily hot. For no kids you need to look at Adults Only hotels, of which there are many, once you've decided where to go.

To find the warmest/sunniest resorts you obviously need to go south.

To minimise flight times you need to be looking for a destination which is almost due south of the UK (so that you don't waste time going east or west).

If you don't want to go as far as Africa (or the islands off the coast of Africa, such as Madeira or the Canary Islands), then an obvious choice would be the Algarve. Here's the weather in Albufeira in May:

The Algarve is served by Faro airport, with a multitude of budget airline flights available from across the UK (with easyJet, Jet2 and Ryanair). Flights from London take about 3 hours.

If that's too far away for you, then Provence is a possibility. (e.g. Marseille or Nice). Here's the weather for Marseilles:

The flight time to Marseille (from Gatwick) is only around 2hours.

Anyone closer coastal resorts will be on the Atlantic coast, with possibly unreliable weather.

If you'd consider a city break though there are more options available to you, such as Bordeaux. (Weather: https://www.accuweather.com/en/fr/bordeaux/131913/may-weather/131913 ). Bordeaux is stunning and just 1 hour 40 minutes from Gatwick.

Morocco is not as far as you might think, and you don't change time-zones. Choice of mediterranean or pacific coasts. Also, it is outside the EU so you can get duty-frees, if that is the sort of thing you like. And the tagines are wonderful. Best grub in all of North Africa; you can get a drink, it's not too strictly Muslim. I saw some very exotic cabarets, belly-dancing, etc.

It would help if you could clarify 2 things:
Where in the UK are you, as flying from north Scotland or the south coast, will add considerable flying time to your journey??
What's your idea of a long flight - what's the maximum flight length you're willing to "endure"??
This would help narrow down suitable destinations.

Hmmm. It's not that close (for someone who doesn't like flying) either. easyJet quotes 3h 55m out and 3h 40m back. Further, although Morocco is in the same time zone as the UK it doesn't use daylight saving time, so in the summer months Brits have to put their watches back 1 hour (to UTC/GMT).

Also not sure atalanta what you meant by can get duty frees because it's outside of EU - within EU there are loose guidelines on personal use (eg cigarettes) but outside of the EU there is strict 200 cigs only (I only know about tobacco and booze). They are not called duty free but you can bring back far more from EU.

I usually go on holiday in May. I went to Portugal last year and it was between 26 and 30 degrees.

If you have a fear of flying you might like to remember that the most hazardous parts of a flight are landing and taking off (in that order). Very few accidents occur mid-flight so the duration of your journey does not significantly increase the chances of an accident. Furthermore, relatively very few accidents involving civil airliners happen at all and the place you stand the greatest chance of being killed or injured is in the car on your way to the airport. Another interesting statistic is that by far and away the greatest number of passenger injuries in aircraft occur whilst the plane is on the ground.

Having said that, The Canary Islands offer almost year round pleasant weather, with a flight time from southern England of around 4 hours. You should find plenty of adult-only hotels on offer.

As far as duty free goods go, bear in mind that although you can bring copious quantities from EU countries, unless you want to pack it into your hold luggage any booze you buy will either have to be bought airside on your return journey or onboard your flight. The Canaries, incidentally, are not part of the EU for Customs purposes and the non-EU limits apply for goods bought there.

try Malta, its sunny, warm, lovely place to go, not too long a flight, and i would as suggested by others look around for adults only hotels, of which i am sure are plentiful.

you have one of two option: either to visit warm places in Africa like Egypt specially sharm sheik resorts which is full of activities pools games and entertainment resorts or south Africa to enjoy beauty of nature warm places zoos and water falls or to go to far east country like Thailand especially pucket island there you will find great outing ocean view hotel with pool musics and more you selection based on which destination id nearer to you
