I was woken up this morning with severe stomach cramps. They lasted about 5 minutes and then eased off. I still have a slight ache but nothing I can't cope with. I have Ulcerative Colitis and wonder if it has something to do with that but the ache is further up above my tummy button although the cramps were further down.

A reasoned assumption based on the fact that the majority of people with Kath's condition would be, p'raps?
I had a c section 37 years ago and was in hospital 8 days(how times change) they used to give you white 'stuff' to shift the wind - always just before evening visiting, husband/ partners in those days, it worked wonderfully but most embarrassingly. The pain was worse than the operation. Sorry to go a bit of thread
Margo, they t055ed me out the next day with a carrier bag full of painkillers, iron tabs and Fragmin syringes.
I don't know how you coped NOM. I should have been in 10 days but as day 9 was a Saturday they let me out. In those days you had a full anaesthetic.
Margo...your situation is different from that of Kathyn's.
pain after abdominal surgery that coming on in spasms, particularly after gynae /pelvic surgery is caused by bouts of paralysis in the small bowel ( paralytic ileus) which isn't the same as "trapped wind."
Why is AH being un-necessarily rude to old doctors ?
Doctors never die - they just run out of patience !
ter daah !

Sqad is of the generation of diagnosis from history and examination alone - armed only with a steth and a bottle of white mixture. The history will give you the diagnosis in 2/3 cases and the examination confirms it

and you know if you dont like his diagnosis -
go and see a doctor ....

and as for saying it is like barmaid not knowing the law
sorry I cant even form that thought - let alone hold it in my head for 2 seconds.

Now back to the girlie wiv guts ache
has it gone yet ?
Sqad, I realised that which was why I apologised for going off thread, it was just that trapped wind was mentioned and it brought back memories of my experience with it :-)

"The history will give you the diagnosis in 2/3 cases and the examination confirms it "

I was taught that in the vast majority of cases, if you hadn't made a diagnosis after listening to the patient, then examination would be unlikely to help.
trapped wind is extremely painful.

PP, see page 2, Kathyan said she was feeling much better.
When the pain is accompanied by the passing of flatus, Sqad, surely it's a safe bet that it's trapped wind?
NoM......quite.

With paralytic ileus.........one CAN't pass wind.

And I didn't (pass wind) it just went! I am feeling much better now thank you. I take medication for my UC (Pentasa) which keeps it under control. I don't particularly want to experience that again!
