Unlocking O2 Phone

As above, I recently bought myself a new smartphone. I gave my old one to my son's girlfriend, thinking it would be simple for her to use. I did not realise I had to unlock it, as she is on a different network. I have found that I can unlock the phone using an online app (I'm with O2) but am a little foggy as to what this will do. Basically I don't have the old phone - if I use the app to unlock the phone, which one does it apply to - the old one or the new one? I don't want to go through the process and find I've messed with the new phone. Help please!

Just take it to an independent high street phone shop or the ubiquitous market stall.

Thanks - son's gf wants to do it legitimately - is it a bit dodgy taking it to one of those places?
No not at all. They do dozens a day.

Ta Zacs Master, much appreciated.
Nay bovver.
If you have had the phone for a certain length of time (2 years?) then just phone up O2 and they will unlock it for you (I think, never done it).
Some help on the O2 support page here

Seems you can do it yourself.

Spat - it's the official O2 app so hopefully not dodgy at all!
