We were out last night, so in the end, who hosted with little Dec? Not one of my favourite shows, a bit too false and shouty for me, but I am just curious.

I wish him well and I hope he overcomes his demons.
"An alcoholic or drug user IS an "unwell" person."

Not so. Alcoholics and drug abusers are addicts. They are addicted to their respective substances. Those substances may make them ill, but the addiction is not an illness.

There was an article a couple of years ago penned by prominent doctors which explained why. Disease or illness requires treatment from medics. Although a positive attitude from the patient is undoubtedly helpful the ultimate cure is usually beyond his will. Addictions may well require help to overcome but the success or failure of the "cure" lies entirely with the will of the addict. They have to positively want to become unaddicted and without that will they remain addicts.

Mr McPartlin is not the victim of an illness. He has not been struck down by a condition beyond his control. He is an addict. His addiction stems from his initial voluntary consumption of alcohol. It will end only when he demonstrates the will to see that it does.

He has, I believe, been charged with being 'Drunk in Charge' and hopefully will be tried and sentenced as such, there really are no excuses.
Do people actually watch these pair of twerps ???? OMG !.
"He has, I believe, been charged with being 'Drunk in Charge'..."

I think he has actually been charged with Driving with excess alcohol, Balders. A mandatory ban for that whereas In Charge has no mandatory ban:

He appears at Wimbledon Mags' on April 4th.
Gulliver, //Do people actually watch these pair of twerps ???? OMG !.//

You don't watch them so how can you possibly form an opinion?
NJ - // Alcoholics and drug abusers are addicts. They are addicted to their respective substances. Those substances may make them ill, but the addiction is not an illness. //

My perception is that Mr Mcpartlin has a number of serious physical and mental health problems. Alcoholism is one of them.

I don't believe that his actions, which may or may not be attributable to his alcoholism, dreadful though they were, means that he has to exempt for a degree of sympathy over his other health issues.
From The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abbuse...

// Addiction is a complex disease of the brain and body that involves compulsive use of one or more substances despite serious health and social consequences. Addiction disrupts regions of the brain that are responsible for reward, motivation, learning, judgment and memory. It damages various body systems as well as families, relationships, schools, workplaces and neighborhoods. //

I'd recommend reading this...it's a very complex condition with no easy answers. The brain itself changes due to addiction...under such conditions how can we assume or expect the addictive personality to behave as we would or would want them to?

Are we meant to wish all the addicts and depressed people who commit crimes well, or just the ones we take a shine to?
Just the ones with a sore knee I think, Garaman, not those queueing up in your local Lloyds for their methadone of a morn.
Good point well made Pasta but I feel you are pushing against some closed and bolted doors.

Explaining someone's illness is not automatically excusing them from the harm they have done or the crime they have committed.

It's stating the facts - I'm heartily pleased no one was too badly injured and hope those in shock recover well.

Ant too must pay the price for his crime but at the same time I wish him well in his recovery.
