Anyone know what the cost of hard wiring a dashcam would be ?

Halfords is quoting £50 - and you must the dashcam from them.

I'm quite practical with most things but car electrics is something I don't mess with !

Cheers.

I followed the instructions on my Dashcam makers website but as I don't have a cigarette lighter in my car I used the fuse for my hazard lights to 'piggyback' as it was the same voltage required.

https://www.nextbase.co.uk/how-to/dash-cam-installation/

You need to find a fuse which is only live when the ignition is on, so I would not recommend the hazard lights as they are live all the time. If the circuit is live all the time you'll need to physically switch-off the dashcam when you leave the car, otherwise you risk a flat battery (I think I measured mine as taking about 1 amp). If you find a circuit which is ignition-dependent the dash cam will start and stop automatically when you drive the car.
CORRECTION: It was the fuse for the Cigarette Lighter I used - it was just lying dormant as nothing was connected to it. Ignore the hazard lights reference.
£50 is about right for a front only dashcam fit.
Halfords is quoting £30 on their website.

Thanks all.

hc. According to your link you are correct, but my local Halfords qouted £30 for non-hard wired and £50 for hard wired. I'll check again tomorrow.

You need something like this

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Nextbase-Hard-Wire-Kit-Car-Dash-Cam-Camera-112-212-312-402G-412-512-512GW-DUO/291517377396?hash=item43dfca2b74:g:53UAAOSwm~daZhLP

Hardest part is accessing the fuse box as this varies from car to car.

On my Skoda Octavia it was easy, about 30 minutes all in, connect the wiring behind the fuse box and run under the trim on the A pillar, then under the edge of the roof lining to the camera mounted on the upper part of the windscreen.

If you are reasonable competent you should be able to do it yourself quite easily.
But if it's off when you park up it won't catch the vandals in action, nor the hit and run during the night :-(
OG - they have a shock-switch and a built-in battery which can power it for a very short time for bumps/vandals.
Good to hear. All of them ? Would be nice if they instantly uploaded to the Net.
My wife sent Halford's a message about this on Twitter and got this reply:

I am very sorry to read this, our Dash Cam fitting is £30. If you could please DM us which store this was I can investigate further and hopefully get you booked in for fitting.

Thanks,
Abbie.

Thanks again everyone.

hc4361 ( Abbie ?) The Halfords that quoted me £50 for a hard wire fitting was the Dartford store.

Cheers.
