Well done!
I prefer Google Docs and Libre myself but Open Office is good. Remember to save your documents as .doc files if they will be read by someone using Office

There are plenty of people who can give computer advice, you dont have to ask for a person by name.

If the laptop had office on it when you sent it away to be fixed the person should return it with office installed.

What office did it have installed? Was it Microsoft Office or a free office suite like open office?

That's the OpenOffice default. Change it to .doc

Minty, there should be a 'drop down' when you 'save as', chose Microsoft Office Word Doc (.doc)

You need to "Save as" and then choose "Microsoft Word document" from the drop-down menu.

will take a wee bit of looking at... have a new lappie to set up .. need to keep this one for photos and other bits... will get office on new one

update... managed to resurrect office on my lappie...had kept a copy of the installation download on external hard drive..phew.. fortunately all my old docs were still there....thanks for your responses though !
