As a child and as a young man I never for one minute made a correlation between a golliwog and a black person. It never even entered my head. I saw them as a made up separate species, like hobbits, or elves. Innocence has its own protection.
Those that think evil, will see evil.

Ditto. To me a golliwog was a bit like a smurf or Telly Tubby might be to a child today. It most definitely wasn't a 'person' (of any race or colour).

However the fact that my own golliwog was knitted out of orange wool might be another reason why it didn't look much like a black person ;-)

Be fair, Teacher1, people can't help coming from Birmingham ;-)
Pftt, call that a rant?
Must try harder. :-)

Never thought I'd be happy to see the gun back.....you do mess with my head..... :-(
Could have been worse Gness.
Imagine if everyone changed their avatar for the one day ;-)
Ah, but what a head to mess with....
Lord, Ozzy....I'd have been taken away to the asylum....! Shoota did it and I ended up giving poor Sunny-Dave what for!!!

Now.....would that be the red one, Shoota...or the grey one?... ;-)
Definitely.

One or the other....
//Lord, Ozzy....I'd have been taken away to the asylum....!//

Might have given you an opportunity to meet me Gness and discover Stephen Fry and I have nothing in common ;-/
Ahhh...but Stephen is likely to be there too, Ozzy......so I could have the pleasure of you both!.....Bliss....xx
Gotta love someone who can find positives hiding in negative situations.

xx ;-)
Wouldn't mind if this PC and even health and safety made matters better but they haven't.
Many years ago there wasn't the squabbles or demands, people mostly got on with each other.
One didn't have to be careful of what one said, at least not in this country.
Young boys carried around sheath knives and throwing knives, without a thought of doing harm to anyone.
Children were allowed to wander and play in the countryside and forests without a care in the world.
We are no longer a happy carefree country that we once were, of course many on here are far too young to have experienced those happy carefree days, mores the pity.

I agree aog, even though I am slightly younger than you ..!
I too went a wandering uphill and down dale for hours on end with pals, sadly since then that walk has had two dual carriageways and some hair raising roundabouts built.

We used to catch tiddlers in a brook at the back of the crematorium, that now has a private gated road into a luxury hosing development.
People of the older age tend to look at times gone by with rose tinted glasses.
Rapes, sexual harassment, murders, robberies, stabbings but because we were so buttoned up we never talked about them.
Think about how many children grew up and later found out that their sister was actually their mother?
The abuse of people in positions of power was allowed to go on because people did not feel they could talk about it - is that right?
Seems to me I would rather live in a society where people were free to talk and not be afraid!
