When Is The Right Time To Get Engaged?

My man and I have been together for almost 3 years, we live together, we have a shared bank account and a lovely litte dog. I am ready to marry my best friend (to clarify, that's him!) but he still isn't quite there yet, which of course, is fine. We're both in our mid/late 20's.

I was just curious as to what other people thought... 2 years / 3 years / 5 years / 10 years... how long were you with your spouse before they popped the question?
