I made a chilli last night and, in addition to copious amounts of cayenne and lashings of Tabasco, I added 5 raw scotch bonnets. Either I'm impervious to spice or these little blighters aren't as hot as they used to be.

The SBs in question were grown in Spain - perhaps a less lethal variety? I remember being in St Lucia over 20 years ago and putting some sweetcorn relish on my burger...and nearly going into cardiac arrest.

If I can't source St Lucian or Ugandan Scotch Bonnets, I'll have to step it up to Komodo Dragon Chilllies which I know are evil...

Do you think certain foods are losing their efficacy these days?

Danny, I minced them in the coffee grinder. They should have blown my head off.
I'd be inclined to think that they weren't really scotch bonnets, but since you didn't react to the cayenne and Tabasco either, have you tried asking A&E to check out your taste buds ?
Question Author
They were definitely Scotch Bonnets, OG. They just didn't have the oomph of varieties I've had previously.
Did you leave the seeds in?
Question Author
Sure did.

I'm trying to kick start labour, but baby didn't so much as hiccup.
I think that your taste buds have probably gone on holiday.:-)
It’s really strange because since I lost my sense of smell (completely!!) my taste buds have changed to the point that salt & vinegar crisps blow my head off. Everyone thinks it’s hysterical!

I find a lot of foods these days aren't as flavoursome as they used to be.

Are we breeding less tasty food varueties for the faint hearted?
Question Author
Smow, when one sense is compromised invariably others become more acute.
Could this loss of taste be a side effect of your pregnancy NoM?
Question Author
If that's the case, Danny, the OH must be pregnant too (I just hope it's mine!)
