Sad news, but what a great innings...I remember him from 1980's 'Flash Gordon' as Emperor Ming's sidekick General....can recall Department S and Jason King a little bit, as he had a wicked moustache...

Although he played the part of a ladies' man his homosexuality was well-known in the acting profession. In 1975 he was convicted of an act of gross indecency in a bus station toilet. Didn't really affect his career though.

He used to fold the cuffs of his shirts up over his suit cuffs - dead cool - some of us did it in school as well.

Of course, it's not quite as effective when you are using a school shirt and a grammar school blazer, but we had to work with what we'd got!

Yeah the cuffs folded back over the jacket sleeves, us plebs at Secondary Modern didn't have to worry about uniforms, andy ;-)
We wore what ever was fashionable at the time.

I know it was said not to focus on his arrest, but I got a shock when I read a bit. Alan Bates!! I had no idea he was gay! Not that it diminished his acting, Whistle Down the Wind....."is it really Jesus?" Unforgettable :)
