Is the addition of a tow bar reportable to insurance companies? I have looked at some listable items, but whilst things like body alterations are shown, towbars are not. Thing is that I need to advise the ins. company that I tow a caravan.

This company fits tow bars and their answer to your question is 'Yes':

The golden rule with insurance anyway is "If in doubt, tell them!"
^ As Chris says it is a modification so must be reported.
On a recent motor quote, it asked, any modifications, excluding tow bars. This was just one company so I always go with tell your insurer.
I informed my Insurance Company (Morethan) and it didn't affect the premium., but if they don't know about any "modification" there will be an excuse to refuse to pay out in the event of a claim, so it is best to notify them, unless the need to report a modification is specifically excluded.
