Tanx Mamyalynne. I had put 'effect' but then changed it!
In truth it would depend on the sentence but that's what I'd go with.
Influence is to have an effect.
50/50 depends whether it is used as a verb or noun. Influence can be both. I struggle to type "a" with my keyboard sticking, so I would go for E.

Those were my thoughts too re-noun/verb
If the lead letter isn't a crosser they should really accept either, but probably won't.
Thesaurus shown the noun Effect first, and the verb Affect.
I'm on the side of the A[ye]'s.

Yes- could be either. As others have said it depends on whether it's being used as a noun or a verb
Verb. Rooney came on and managed to affect/influence the team's performance immediately.
Noun. The effect/influence Rooney had on the game was significant.
