We (Mrs Zacs and I) spent a weekend with my SIL who both had fit bit devices. The step counts were wildly different. My conclusion is they’re a gimmick.
My Fitbit Charge HR and my iPhone give remarkably similar step counts if both are carried all the time. The Fitbit can overcount as it interprets some arm movements as steps when they aren't. They both use 3D accelerometers which detect the 'jolts' of steps (or what are perceived as steps) to calculate activity. As with all such things they are supposed to be a guide or an indication of how much one moves throughout a day.
Try putting it on your ankle, going for a speed walk and counting your steps around the block
You and your wife must take more, or less strides than each other.

Or....

Bigger or smaller strides, Z-M.
