When you say "bar steward" instead of b*stard, or "sugar" instead of ***. It's not a euphemism. The word 'mincing' keeps coming into my head, but that's not it. I'm sure there is a word for it, but I can't think of it. While on the subject, when Americans say "ass" instead of *rse, is this an example of the word I'm looking for, or is it just the way Americans pronounce *rse?

Edit: just found another term: minced oath. I've never actually heard this term used, mind you, but still, it's a closer match than plain "euphemism".

Yes! Minced oath is what I was looking for. It came to me while I was AFK. It's not a euphemism, dannyk13 and geevo. A euphemism is like saying 'passed away' instead of 'died', or 'We lost him' instead of 'He died'.

Sorry, dannyk13 and geevo, it seems that a minced oath is a sub-class of euphemism. But I had euphemism in my question, so I wasn't looking for that.
