We are thinking of pushing our kitchen wall by about a metre, as its a bit narrow for the length, it would be about 10 metres long.

Can anyone give us a rough idea how much it would cost?

I think it will be mega bucks and not worth it. What do you think?

My daughter and SIL have just done this and also knocked down the wall between the kitchen and their dining room, putting in an island.

I think their building costs + kitchen units etc were about £23K, but they have added well over that to the value of the house.
The best way is to get a local builder round and ask him. They're used to giving rough estimates without necessarily getting the job. I used to work with someone whose son-in-law was a builder and he said he only expected to get work from about 10% of quotes.

Thanks both for your replies.

Chrissa, can I ask what sort of area your daughter lives in? I've been shocked by the different prices for services depending on North or South.

We live in the South where we are presumed rich, ha ha, and will pay more.
Depending upon the level of finish and it would be a ground floor extension suggest you initially budget for approx £1500 per sq metre. Based upon your figures = possibly £15,000?
Yes, DarceyK. She lives in Southampton. I know what you mean.

Thanks again, we are weighing up weather to move or improve.
That’s exactly what my daughter did. They love where they live and so decided to make their house better, for them.
Not quite the same thing, but we had our conservatory taken down and a proper brick built extension put in it's footprint (approx 3 metres x 3 metres). We had a proper tiled roof put on with a velux window installed and toilet was put in the extension as well The cost was under £10k. We do live in the North and it was 2 years ago though!

Kathyann, that sounds very good, looks like we might go for it. Just waiting for some money we are due to come through so all being well we get the builders in for quotes in the New Year.
EEK Kathy ..can you send your builders up here please ? lol ..
He's very good Murray. He does allsorts. We are waiting for a quote to have the chimney breast knocked out to have a gas log burner set into it! He's done loads of work for us and we've always been highly satisfied. He goes the extra mile and is a bit of a perfectionist. He's not happy if it isn't right!
