Hi. We are replacing our old laminate flooring with 12mm laminate, the joiner says we should have bought 8mm again as 12mm is harder to lay and he will have to charge us more money to install it. does this sound right ? We thought 12mm was better as it would last longer and has better soundproofing. why would it be harder to install, surely it would click together the same or maybe better ? any advice appreciated

The thicker laminate will certainly be better. I certainly can't see any reason for an increased cost, unless, as mentioned, trimming door heights is needed.

I'm not sure, paddy. I'd guess that the 8mm stuff is bendier than the 12mm and so easier to fit in to the space, especially near the walls.
Probably 50% more difficult to saw through around the edges.

It sounds a little odd to me, but if doing a perfect job I suppose he may be cutting the skirting to slide the edges under, or some such complication.
I was thinking the same, skirting and doors.

Thanks TB. That's what I thought. Now had a quote for £300 which is more like I thought - and this is from a specialist laminate fitter
