New York In November...
Want to go for a week mid November. Anybody been? Recommendations of places to stay, visit etc??

if you look at the apirports' websites they should give you up to date information about the transport links (which are important if you've got heavy bags).
The taxi fare between JFK and Manhattan is fixed, though you might need a calculator. To Newark it's not, probably because it's actually in New Jersey

If I stayed for a week though I think I'd go for a larger room than we had. Was fine for us for a few days as we were out doing stuff all the time save getting back to sleep but for a week, I'd probably want somewhere with a little more space. It was the hotel used at the end of Maid in Manhattan.
Save a day doing the bus tours, we walked most places, only took the subway once, which was a bit on an experience! It was back when I could walk ok but we saw so much by just walking. We walked from around Time Square down Fifth Avenue and all the way down to the Staten Island Ferry, a very long walk but we went through all kinds of districts like Grenwich Village, Little Italy, China Town, Wall Street etc... It included paying our respects at the World Trade Centre site.
Shopping wise, Bloomingdales is nice but I found Macys very ordinary, more like Debenhams. I ended up in Starbucks while I left my ex to it as it was Labour Day sale weekend and he was looking for bargain jeans. I'm not a bit shopper though.
We went for a horse and carriage ride in Central Park which was nice.

The last time I went taxi drivers expect at least a 10% tip. Bar staff don't expect to give you change from a ten dollar note for an $8 drink.
Loo attendants expect at least a dollar, even if she's just sat down reading a newspaper.
Waiting staff - oh my lord! Don't even think about giving less than 15%.

I've only read the first page...but all the suggestions are ones I'd recommend. I've never been, but I'd really like to see the High line...its a walkway by it overlooking the city and east river. Spectacular views, lovely landscaping,a highrise oasis.

As for weather...yeh it's November and you'd expect cold, but over the coming week temperatures are ranging from a high of 23(today and I think Monday), to an over night low of 5-7deg.
So I've packed cool tops,a few woolies, a lightweight jacket, and a parka minus its heavy lining so I can layer. I'll probably spend most of my time in shopping malls with my SIL. ;-)

So much choice and a great NY diner experience, rather brusque service but great food.
We got some really good advice on what tips are expected for what by a lady serving in a bar we went to while waiting to be able to check in. It's a serious tipping culture there, not so much about service but it is expected and you are expected to tip the correct amount. Always a good idea to have lots of change to be able to give an exact amount as possible (including tip) or risk paying more when you don't get your change back, like Cloverjo said.

Don't know if you'll see this smow, but we may be visiting this site later in the week....The Oculus, a newly opened transportation hub/mall/piece of stunning modernist architecture. It's at the site of the World Trade centre.

One more unusual shopping expedition is to take a hire car out towards Albany, 45 minutes or so and near West Point is the most amazing discount centre that you will have ever seen, Woodbury, with all the major brands and more - it's vaaaaast. Come back on the other side of the Hudson, some nice restaurants around Garrison and back into Dobs Ferry.....
