I didn't know AINE, which explains a lot but what role does the word 'stale' play in the clue? TAE is presumably EAT written upwards but there's no anagram involved if so.
eat as noun (archaic) food. Chambers
Stale is a cryptic indicator of an obsolete word and aine is a pretty obsolete word for senior .
Could be eat for food I suppose.
