One of my children wants this for Christmas - it seems a great deal, very well priced.
I have never used the Amazon operating system and would like to know if it is possible to install Android over it?

I would also welcome your opinions of the Amazon OS if you have used it.

The install of Google Play Store looks pretty simple and straight forward, how old is the child who wants the device, anything over 10 and I'd let them do it themselves :-)

I have no experience of either the Fire or Android but the attached link says that the Amazon OS is based on Android and with a little work/tweaking can be made to run exactly like the 'standard' Android https://www.howtogeek.com/232726/how-to-install-the-google-play-store-on-your-amazon-fire-tablet/

Thanks for that, Fitzer. I'd have to take a deep breath before trying that.

Anyone done it?

Have you got the new one, released a few days ago, minty?

Can you get Gmail on it?
had mine about a year ..but have my gmail on it !

Oh! I've been fed the wrong information. Thanks for that :)
there may have been a new generation issue.. gmail..hotmail etc easy to set up
Any device which has an internet browser will be able to access Gmail & Hotmail. It would appear the Fire can't install the Gmail app without the Play Store as mentioned before (this could now no longer be the case of course as things change so quickly)

Yes, it's the GMail app he'd want, Fitzer, as well as the usual Google Maps, Drive etc.
The Amazon OS is built on Android, it is a fork of it.
Just leave it as it is, your child won't have any problem using it because it is 80% the same as standard Android.
