Rip Off this morning, young persons talking about the cost of Insurance & getting ripped off, saying the Insurance was more expensive than the car they had, Is it fair to the Young? it has been said that they are involved in a lot of accidents, should it be that for the first 3 years they can not drive a car above 950 / 1000cc? this way they learn how to control their way of driving thus helping themselves to get a cheaper Insurance.

As I recall his premiums were modest.

Until his insurance was revoked following the five stationary car incident.
I think this needs putting in a bit of prespective.
When I passed my testing at 17 years old and 17 days, I had a 650 fiat 126 - that cost me £350 TFT to insure.
Given inflation and wages increase etc I am sure in real terms that its not far off what is being paid today!
the value of their car is irrelevant it's the damage they can do with it to people and property. Their insurer must cover all eventualities, eg they kill a heart surgeon in their £500 banger = £ 5m up the pictures. That's what they pay for and the stats back up the insurers, QED they hit things.
^ TTT has the point here, a new young driver in a £500 banger could hit or swerve into a Bentley Continental worth £500,000 and cause personal injury to the driver and passengers that cost £millions.
As I said earlier , a driver under 20 has a one in three chance of an insurance claim accident in a single year.
Actually my insurance was about £1250 when I passed my test a couple of years ago in a 1200cc diesel which was a year old. As my Dad has garages etc we went through a ton of cars young and old and found the newer the car the cheaper it was by and large. A Fiesta I had a quote for was well in excess of £2k. Made no sense to me, as my little car zips along. What DID make an enormous difference was postcode. I think if you gave most young people an initial flat rate that was affordable and it didn't go up unless they caused an accident ( and then it sky rockets) they'd pay attention to that. I know I look after my no claims.
