Fertile days

My husband and I have been trying for a baby for about a year. We don't get much of chance to have sex (sorry if anyone finds this offensive, by the way), as we both work long hours, so those few fertile days are very important to us. When I get my period I spot for at least 3 days before, am quite heavy for 3 days, and then spot for another 3 days or so. So which counts as the first day of my period, so I can work out my ovulation days? The spotting days or the heavy days?

i'd say the heavy days . we are trying for a baby too and have been using ovulation test sticks wich can sometimes be costly but work well especialy if you have irregular perriods . .... there is also a good book to read , Zita West's guide to getting pregnant
