If anyone could shed some light on the following I`d be most grateful. Some 16th century tenant farmers paid an annual rental for `vert` or `greenhew`. What was `vert` or `greenhew`?
Many thanks.

Vert = plants/crops of all kinds. Greenhew = harvesting the crop or green vegetation growing in a wood or forest and serving as a cover for game.

Growing green stuff and being able to harvest it.
Greenhew....the right to cut Vert in a forest, for instance

Vert.......Everything bearing green leaves in a forest ....Also that power which a man has, by royal grant, to cut green wood in a forest.

Vert = plants/crops of all kinds.

Greenhew = harvesting the crop or green vegetation growing in a wood or forest and serving as a cover for game.

Thanks Tilly2 and yogi-bear for the prompt replies and for answering my question.
The lovely Tilly's answer is much better......

Just asked my 16 year old daughter, who's taking A/AS level in History at College......she shouted down from her bedroom...."I don't have a clue, Dad".

I'm getting old, really old :-(
