If you're doing things legally (and paying for your downloads) then Amazon is the obvious choice (unless you want to use iTunes, which I hate). Other sites, such as eMusic, can be cheaper but have smaller catalogues:

However many (most?) people seem to go down the route of illegal stream-ripping these days and simply nick their MP3 files from Youtube. If you want to do so, one of the best ways to do it is to use Firefox together with this extension:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/easy-youtube-video-download/
(I only use it to get music which isn't commercially available; I'm happy to pay for everything else)
Are there no free legal sites ? It occurs to me that new bands might want to get known, and more established ones might want to offer freebie tracks as part of their marketing to draw more in, or as "thank you"s to loyal fans.

Personally, I hardly ever listen to music that's not from the radio, these days. Music collecting seemed to get dropped as the years went by.

https://soundcloud.com/

(Strictly that's a streaming site, rather than a download one but it serves the purpose you mention, O_G, and it's easy enough to rip the streams anyway)
actually, you can download from youtube online

used it a couple of times
My suggestion is https://ganamp3.net .Just search and download mp3. Or paste youtube id in search box and download it.
