I went to church yesterday, with one of my visitors who attends church regularly. It was the Eucharist service.

I got very befuddled with all the sung responses and the standing up and sitting down. I didn't know any of the hymns except one and that was sung in too high a key for me. I sat alone whilst everyone went to receive the communion but didn't feel conspicuous.

I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of sitting in an ancient, beautiful building with the sun streaming through the stained glass windows. The words and deeds meant very little to me and I just lost myself in the serenity of the environment. I did enjoy the sermon though.

I'm glad I went but I won't be making a habit of it.

Tilly at 7.something. One of the huge differences between Protestants and R.Cs. is the transubstantiation issue, goes back to Henry VIII and the whole split with the Pope. Protestants regard the bread and wine as symbolic; R.C.'s as literal. We have one member of the congregation who is an R.C. (married to one of the churchwardens) and he cannot bring...

1, 2, a 1, 2, 3, 4....
Nothing on safari on my little iPad on this or any other thread. The wide open spaces I see remind of me childhood hunting buffalo across the Great Plains with Daniel Boone.

All things bright and beautiful
All creatures great and small.
All things wise and wonderful
The Lord God made them all.

But what we never mention
Though AB gardeners know it's true
Is when he made the goodies,
He made the trollish baddies too!

All things minty spray and swattable
AB Disasters great and small.
All things paraquatable
The Lord God made them all.

The fungus on the sherrard goosegogs,
The club root on tilly's greens,
The slugs that eat the gness lettuce
And chew balder's aubergines!

All things minty spray and swattable . . .

The douglas fly that gets togo's carrots,
The wasp that gnaws at LIK's plums,
how black the AB's gardener's outlook,
Though green or racist may be Ed's thumbs!

All things minty spray and swattable . . .

But still AB gardeners labour
midst mazie's vegetables and flowers
And pray what hits our Irish neighbours
Will somehow bypass ours.

All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and tiggy small.
All things wise and News wonderful
The Lord Balders made them all.

Any road up. I enjoyed the church service!
Will you be a regular now then ?.

No, Yont. I won't become a regular church goer. It was nice but I don't have any faith or belief in the basic premise.

It would be wrong to pretend that I do. I just like churches and the antiquity of them. When we go on holiday, I always like to visit the 'local' cathedrals and churches. I just like the atmosphere, the candles and the architecture.
Same here, Yilly.

:-)

Favourite cathedral?
Lichfield.
Not many miles away from me, Yilly.
Norwich or Winchester for me, Wells, Salisbury, Exeter and Ely also up there.......
I love to visit churches and cathedrals when I'm in a new place, despite being an atheist. I love the architecture and history.
I've been to one Catholic service, a funeral, and was dismayed to see how long it was going to go for, looking at the Order of Service.

I also felt a bit awkward at the Communion staying in my seat, and the Peace be with You handshake.

I honestly couldn't choose a favourite. Each of them has some remarkable feature.
