This road is in Willingdon, East Sussex. I know it quite well as it used to be my paper round but one thing that has always intrigued me is how it got its name. The only thing I can come up with is there was a Lieutenant General G F Gorringe who in 1901 convened a military court on the farm Riet valley near Middelburg to try and execute HJ Van Heerden. In this case, the link between Gorringe and Valley seems tenuous to say the least and to name a road in England after an execution in East Africa seems odd. Does anybody know if this road was named after this event or is there another, different, connection.
