Does airbnb do anything other than provide a platform for bookings and payments? Does it for example ensure safety of accommodation ie. comformation with electrical, fire safety and hygiene regulations that apply to commercial premises?

My friend travels the world and often stays in AirBnBs. She has had no problems and loved the experiences.

No, AirB&B does not check that properties conform to regs

In some countries it is illegal to do deal with unlicenced traders (which is what some airbnb providers are).
You have to confirm to AirB&B that your property complies with local laws, but they don't check
