Canyou be more specific? Do you want to wipe it so that you can sell the computer without fear of someone getting your information? Are you scrapping the drive? Is the drive broken and you want to dispose of it securely?

Thanks bhg481. I have some one interested in computer parts, but ideally I would like to wipe it so that I am sure there is nothing on it if that is what I decide to do. Alternatively I am happy to just scrap it. Thanks again.
If you are scrapping it, take it out, smash it with a hammer and burn it in a fire if you can.
Thousands of used computers end up in Africa where they are dismantled for scrap, but unscrupulous people can and do gain access to valuable information such as bank details off the hard drives.
Don't smash it and burn it - open it up and remove the platters and cut them up. The two kidney-shaped magnets are the strongest you're ever likely to come across. If they stick together it can be quite difficult to get them apart but fun trying.
If you're going to pass it on to someone 1ozzy's link is good.
