How deep do you want the gravel to be?
Question Author
artificial plants..so maybe inch and a half to 2 inch
Well, then you'll want 2*48*18 = 1728 cubic inches = exactly one cubic foot of gravel.
It's probably sold by weight.
This suggests a 25kg bag should be more than sufficient

Annoyingly most gravel bags these days are sold in metric units, but I think that amounts to two large gravel bags at homebase?

or 2 bags if you want to be safe and be sure to have enough for a 2 inch depth.
Maybe buy one and try that first

cheers guys, your help is much appreciated

The bags of cat litter in the shops are in Litres. Maybe this stuff will be the same.
If it is litres I think 25-30 litres should be adequate
That would mean the gravel would take up about 10% of the tank
"Annoyingly most gravel bags these days are sold in metric units".
Why "annoyingly"? It's eminently sensible...if you've had the sense to measure other dimensions metrically, too.
It's the mixing of metric and Imperial measurements that causes problems.
