Hi. Thinking of going into Boston (USA) about first week October, hiring a car touring north towards Portsmouth, Portland. Was wondering because it's the peak season in this area is it neccessary to book hotels before arrival or is it ok to find Motel / Hotel where ever we find ourselves at the end of the day. TIA

Absolutely! The crowds can be a little overwhelming sometimes, though most of the "leaf-peepers" tend to be on tour buses. I would suggest checking some Bed and Breakfast accomodations. There are some beautiful places to stay such as Booth Bay. I would also suggest going about 12 miles farther than Portland and stay at Freeport. It's the home of L.L. Bean and that tour can take 4 hours or more. Tour the outlet, come out to the outside waterfall and have an ice cream from the nearby Ben and Jerry's (I'd recommend Cherry Garcia). At any rate... it's a beautiful time in New England!...
