Any Ipad2 Experts Here? I Can't Re-Charge My Ipad.

It has no lock/unlock function and it had to be turned off after each use. I must not have done it properly as it now has no charge at all.
All I can get on the screen is a picture of an empty battery. I can't turn it off and I can't recharge it.

I have just bought a Genuine Apple Smart Cover (coming tomorrow 6 June) I thought it may do the trick.

Does anyone have any hints please? Any help will be appreciated.
