need some advice what is best fast growing conifer / fir tree for a garden edge. garden is 9M x 6Metres .

just want a border around edge . went to B&Q yesterday and seen very small trees approx 1 ft in height for £3 each , other slightly bigger ones approx 2ft high for £6 each or bigger again for £13.00

i presume trees need a spacing of about 1 metre apart ?

so, i need advice from the experts on here as i have not the first clue about gardening etc.
also , which is best cheapest way for me to kill weeds & grass as i will be planting trees around edges and then i want to lay pebbles/gravel and some slabs in centre , so need kill of grass & weeds then lay a membrane and lay stones.

Lots of info here, Pyracantha is quite good, fast growing about 2ft a year and has large thorns for security.

Without any shadow of doubt : Thuja plicata (red cedar) beautiful hedging conifer which is often overlooked.
1m spacing would be good for this tree.

good link vulcan, thankyou
A thick mulch around the base of the trees will suppress weed growth and retain moisture, helping them to establish far quicker.

ive decided against a privacy hedge / trees,
too expensive and maintenance .

going for fencing instead
I think red robin looks lovely as hedging behind a fence.

It's not evergreen but I would go for copper beech. Beautiful.
