My IPad has stopped notifying me when I have mail, so I have to check regularly. The sound notification begins when I open the inbox. Previously I always got a tune to tell me I had new mail. Any ideas please?

Check your notifications in, Settings. It might have inadvertently been switched off or your sound is turned down.

Thank you, have done that, it all looks OK.

Is it possible that you have changed the 'fetch new data' option from push in settings, mail, accounts, then the mails would only come through once you open the app and hence no sounds until you do.
