A useful tip with Google Translation, Baldric, is to try translating results back into the original language. 'Vente de bottes de voiture' comes out as 'sale of car boots' which, as far as I know, isn't exactly what happens at a car boot sale ;-)

Aah, Cardinal Richelieu has just arrived ^
bonjour mon ami
Richelieu had amazing foresight....."Savoir dissimuler est le savoir des rois - et les vendeurs des vide-greniers."
what are you selling, mate, though it's already more than double it should be.....

C'est formidable, pourquoi diable ai-je jamais pris la peine d'apprendre le français en premier lieu?
Last summer in Provence I attended a "brocante". People were selling out of doors, from tables which they had brought. They had come in cars, but were not selling from the cars. I am assured that this is the nearest you get in France to a British Car-boot sale. They were selling much the same stuff as at a car-boot-sale, but with heavy emphasis on linen - bottom-drawer-stuff - embroidered tablecloths and sheets.
I'd go for Vide Grenier, myself.

^^ I was trying to type that there isn't a true equivalent.
I'm with Jourdain (not literally vous comprenez....) vg's are boot sales, (kids clothes, pots & pans, ornaments, jig-saws stuck to board etc). Brocantes are collectables and low level antiques - often the two are run together but usually under the soubriquet 'Vide Greniers' (Literally 'empty (your) attics.)
You quite often see cryptic hand painted signs at the side of the road by villlages and towns saying 'VG Dim 13' or whatever (Vide Grenier here on Sunday the 13th)
alors, mes mesdames et messieurs, voilà la reponse formidable pour notre ami(e) Cmitchell.

Night all and happy Bargain Hunt (no nightmares of that Winnalot character appearing - now Kate Bateman and that's another matter.)
