Thanks everyone, snarf isn't in my Chambers so I was scratching my head ! Mind you, I'm not sure a growl and a snarl are quite the same thing, especially when the other two options are GNAR and KNAR !
Just me, and you're welcome.

growl
ɡraʊl/
verb
1.
(of an animal, especially a dog) make a low guttural sound of hostility in the throat.
"the dogs yapped and growled at his heels"
synonyms: snarl, bark, yap, bay
"the black dog growled at him"
I recommend you get a newer Chambers as "snarf" is in mine.
