If I set my sat nav and then make a diversion, does it mess my directions up? Or does it catch on? Daft question I know, but I'm about to drive 200 miles using sat nav for first time!

If you divert from the chosen route it will try its best to get you back on to it as soon as possible, possibly involving U-turns. It will eventually give up and create a new route from where you are to your original destination.
It will start telling you to turn around but after a short while will begin to give you a new route to your destination. This is on a Tom Tom.

Thanks a lot for your prompt answers - since I'm about to set off. It's only a small diversion, so sounds like it should be ok. Thanks again.
^^^ Agreed.

I drove one of the first satnav enabled vehicles in the country (even before the emergency services had got them) and even the very first models would automatically recalculate a route if you missed a turn or otherwise diverted.
