I have just fitted a Basin Mate seal to stop a leak. My problem is I cannot tighten the black locking nut sufficiently. I have tried a Mole Wrench but it is chewing the plastic nut. Is here a special spanner for this job? My basin fittings are 32mm

They don't want to be too tight or you can distort the seal. I always use gland pliers ( often called water pump pliers).
Just like those, they are indispensable.
Have you cross threaded the Nut? retry take the plastic nut off & retry, as you have said, but it should tighten with fully extended moles.
