Does anyone have any ideas for getting rid of creeping buttercup from a lawn, that don't involve nasty chemicals or a lot of digging? The lawn is regularly subjected to free-range children and chickens.

regular cutting out when mowing, will leave a wee hole but that will fill...I always mow with a knife for cutting out !
I have some of this in my lawn and it don't bother me much, that is not until it reaches the edge and gets into the flower bed, where it can try to take over.
What I do is keep it under control by keeping a trowel or hand fork handy and dig out the plant by tracing along the runners to I find the rooted areas along the creeping stems.
Hope your patch isn't too extensive. Teasing it out with a rake, you may find helps.
there are six species of buttercup in england
and ranunculus repens ( I thought ripiens but neva mind) is one
Only five more to identify....

getting rid of them - I dont think I would TBH
Pour boiling water on it and then add some salt. This will kill it.
Is Creeping buttercup worse than the usual buttercup?
If you really want to get rid of them you have to get them at their roots, I think.
I'm guessing that those chickens are happy to peck away at the grass but not the buttercups.
When I was a Kid (long long ago), we made daisy chains and held buttercups under each others chins, to see if we liked butter, even though we already knew we did, but that was all part of the magic....Hopeless romantic, I know!
Oh yes, Chipchopper. You've just brought back memories of family picnics with the buttercup under the chin thing.

And daisy chains. I don't know if today's kids would have the patience to do that. I remember sitting for ages on our lawn or in parks making them.

Sorry, cluckyChick, I've gone slightly off-topic.
Someone once recommended Verdone which kills weeds but not the grass. Found it very effective.
