I am making some postcards and I want to draw a solid (filled) rectangle onto them so I can write text in it. The only way I can think of doing this is to insert it into Word, add a shape, fill it, and do a screenshot! Not good though and I'd like to know if there is any software where I can draw straight on. I tried Paint, but the important image is MASSIVE and it doesn't give you an option to shrink it or zoom out even. I do have Photoshop CS3 but don't know how it works, or if I can do this. Thanks

Open the jpeg in Photoshop
Under Layers, add a layer and make sure it is the top layer
Use the select tool, looks like a dashed retantangle, and draw the shape you want.
Go to the colour pallet and select white.
Go to the paint bucket and fill the shape you have made.
You can then use the type tool to add words.
Whats wrong with good old Paint - its in accessories on every version of Windows.

I did try Paint- see my question! Thanks Gromit, I will try that!
Are you printing them yourself, or getting them professionally printed?

If professionally I would avoid anything but Photoshop as you need 300 dpi (min. 200 dpi) for printing and needs to be cmyk.

Let us know.
Paint does have a zoom facility which may be accessed in 3 different ways:
Hold down CTRL and use the scroll where on the mouse
Hold down CTRL and press PgUp or PgDown
Click on the View tab, and then on the Zoom+ or Zoom- icons
Google this
