why do I keep getting a not responding message? is it something to do with windows 10? it's so maddening, thanks sniffa

Could be many things but probably something running is taking all the resources. CPU or memory. Try looking ar task manager and see what's being greedy.

Does it happen to one programme or many ?
It would help to know which program is giving you that message. My post here applies to Firefox but much the same could apply to other programs as well:

I'll add to that by further suggesting that you run a malware scan, using the free version of Malwarebytes, as malware is well-known for hogging a computer's resources:
