Can anyone recommend an good sonic cat deterrant, either solar or battery operated. Bought some solar rectangular ones about £12 each but useless.
Also are there any plants that cats hate? I am fed up of dealing with the foul mess. Thanks in advance.

Very diluted j e y e s fluid keeps them away ... I have a gravel drive and for some reason dog walkers think it's a toilet ... bit of the old j f puts them off

I have been bringing home the used coffee grounds free from Waitrose to deter slugs and it seems to be working for cats as well. And smells nice. And good compost. What more could one ask.
Also perhaps holly cuttings scattered around, and wooden kebab skewers driven into the ground, dull side out, might help. Just don't lean in quickly and poke your eye out.
And finally, I read that large plastic cola or water bottles etc, filled with water and left lying on the ground are deterrents. The cats don't like the slight movement and shininess of the water.
I find a water pistol works well and entertaining watching the cats scale a 6ft fence with bits hanging from their rear ends.
Saw a picture of plastic forks, tines up, 'planted' in a garden to deter cats.
Keep saving them from trips to the chippy.
I have some rue planted and they do not seem to like the smell.
Nothing worse than finding catshit amongst your lettuces and having planters used as a cat ***.

These seem to work but you may need several depending on what area you want to protect.. I cannot find any water pistols with adequate range but have found that children's toy guns that shoot harmless missiles have a startling effect. Nothing worse than finding catshit amongst your lettuces.
My old Dad once told me that the only way to stop cats messing in your garden is a twelve bore shot gun, I have often been tempted but held off as I know their owners love them, and would only get another one to replace it anyway.

Thanks to all who answered, I'm still not winning the war. Have invested in a water sprayer repeller and seem to be winning some battles, but wondering about it freezing in winter!!!
Here are some more ideas. You will find that cats are intelligent, devious and what works for one cat may not work for another.
