Thanks for the (fantastically quick) answers and for the advice about putting in letters I had already found. It did not occur to me that people might just be solving these clues in isolation--although in this case, it wouldn't have helped since I had 22a as "unsealed", which put "s" as the first letter of the second word. No wonder I couldn't find an answer. So what's the answer to 22? Clue is "a french nut taking in the french open" which in my answer parses as un (French "a") seed (nut) taking in the french ("la"--OK, wrong way round but that wouldn't be the first cheat this compiler has used), making "open"=unsealed.
