Please can you help sort an argument?! My friend says that the slang term 'birds' used for women is used in American as well as Britain but I'm not so sure. I have googled but what I really want to know, is what the American Answerbank users think. Is, or was 'birds' ever used in USA? Or is it just UK slang?

My impression is that the use of such terminology is these days less widespread in the USA than it was. To the best of my knowledge the term 'bird' for a (young) female is not used there and mostly unrecognised as such. On the other hand 'chick' is what has been widely used there instead (exactly the same use by the same type of people).
I've never heard it in the USA (I don't live there but I've often visited). However, this says it's US slang too

I certainly never heard it in the 40+ years I grew up in and lived in the US. Maybe it's recent...though I doubt it.
I thought the US term was 'broads'.

American Answerbank ???
Or Dame.
Answerbank users who are American I think Scarlett means.
The term was once used fairly widely, but mostly among the younger set… say 20 on down. Isn't used much these days. Probably went out of style around 2010 or so...
