I have been called to advise that a charity was going to help me to write of my credit card debt.

I was intrigued - I asked the Asian gentleman if I had this right - a charity I have never heard of, and that does not know me, is going to clear my credit card debt, at no charge to me? He confirmed that I was correct.

I advised him that I was indeed born at night, but it wasn't last night ... and terminated the call.
Many, many times. I don't answer the phone to numbers I don't recognise, now.
Chrissa - They are wise to that - my call was from a registered number, but of course, it does not accept incoming calls.

As a freelance writer, I get calls all the time from record labels and PR's, so I do answer all calls, whether I know the number or not.

It's part of the downside, but it doesn't bother me, so that's fine.
If I don't recognise the number as being from a friend or relative, I don't pick up. With the answer machine on constantly, if it's a genuine caller, they can leave a message. They never do.

Being a retired widow, I don't need to answer the phone. I appreciate you have to.

Register with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) http://www.tpsonline.org.uk if they still call after 28 days report them to the Information Commissioners Office (ICO) http://www.ico.org.uk
I am, registered. There's not so many now.
The Telephone Preference service can only block calls originating in the UK (I believe). Most of these scam calls are from abroad. I do the same as Chrissa, if it's important, they will leave me a message.
I was called (don't even live in UK but that doesn't drop them) and was told I'd had a car accident, could I tell them about it as I probably had a claim. I told them I was so glad they had called as I had lost my memory in the accident and as they seemed to know all about it I needed witnesses! Well they put the phone down immediately!
