Give it a go Sandy, let us know how you get on.
Not sure sandy. They can travel the other way with ease it appears though.
I doubt it. The personnel at passport control are pretty observant.
Can the people of Britain and N.I.travel to European Ireland without a passport?
You have to go through two passport control points at Dover ferry terminal and at Eurostar departure stations (for the UK and for France). It's unlikely that you'd get through both of them.
Togo:
There's a bi-lateral 'open border' agreement between the UK and the Republic of Ireland, guaranteeing free movement of citizens of both countries between the two countries. Airlines require photographic ID (and ferry companies advise that it's carried) but Ryanair is the only operator which insists on a passport. (All other carriers accept driving licences and most will accept bus passes, etc).
Is Ireland in the EU free movement zone?
Ireland has indicated that it would like to join the Schengen zone but it can't while the bi-lateral agreement with the UK is still in place. (The UK and Ireland are the only two counties within the EU which aren't in, or committed to join, the Schengen zone).
Well, I did back in 2001! I managed to get out of England, down to the South of France and back to Calais where the chap at control informed me my passport was out of date. Fortunately, he seemed to think it was funny, waved us through and no-one in England checked. I suppose that makes me an illegal immigrant!
To answer the original question - no, it's not (legally) possible

It used to be possible to travel to (I think) Spain on a passport up to a year out of date, but no longer.

In the other direction, most EU citizens can travel to the UK without a passport - they need a valid National ID card though. 'We' or rather our esteemed government of the day - decided some time back to abandon ID cards here.
Did it myself about 8yrs ago. Flew to Barcelona from Gatwick for a weekend, then flew from there to Majorca for a 2 week stay and then back to Gatwick.

I was then told my passport was expired. When I looked it was 2 months out of date!
