Also known as grains of paradise, a spice derived from a plant in the ginger family, tastes like pepper, coriander and cardamom (10) M-L-G-E-T-.

I found an answer to this but it's too short......is there an alternative spelling?

I don't think the online is as complete as the printed version Danny, but can't be sure.

I always like to have a paper copy, a good investment.
Yes, I think I'll swap my Collins for a Chambers.
it is malaguetta
The malagueta chile (spelled "mala"), used in Brazilian cooking, is often confused with melegueta pepper (spelled "mele"), also known as "grains of paradise", a cardamom-like West African spice

This suggests meleguetta is different to malaguatta and is the one known as grains of paradise.
I have reached a similar conclusion - it is definitely not malagueta/malaguetta which is a Brazilian spice. The 'grains of paradise' spice is melegueta but as yet unable to conclusively find an alternative spelling as meleguetta to fit the grid.
Hooray!! Found it. It is meleguetta. Check the webpage http://theepicentre.com/spice/grains-of-paradise.
Hope this helps everybody.
Check my posts at 12.42 & 12.52 Saturday
And mine on another thread where I said meleguetta but I was told that with respect I was wrong and an explanation was given about having to use Chambers
So it looks like we were wrong danny
No it looks like I was right FF with Meleguetta
We shall simply have to wait and see what Kate Mepham/The Telegraph uses as a point of reference - a Dictionary, Wikipedia or a Spice info site.

Certainly become a talking point that's for sure.
