Is there a free website that could give me some idea of what a council house may be worth in order possibly buying it ?

can't you just get an estate agent to come and value it? surely they wouldn't know you didn't own it? last time mine was valued i don't remember paying them a fee
Simply enter the postcode here (leaving all of the other fields blank) and click 'Show results':
http://landregistry.data.gov.uk/app/ppd

That will show you the price that every house in that street sold for (unless it's a very long road, with more than one postcode) over the past twenty years.
Puzzled how you intend to buy it though?
Presumably 888's Council operates the 'Right to buy' scheme?

Or did you mean how they would finance the purchase?
This website might be useful, 888:

The calculator (available from Section 2) will tell you what discount you can get off the market price (which you can get an estimate of via my first link).
I noticed it wasn't clear if 888 was asking about the house they presently rented. Was wondering if they were planning on buying up the south side of town ;-)

Yeah Chris, for a mere 20 years only. On the other hand it means older folk don't have that private info accessible over the Net by all & sundry.
Use this calculator. just enter post code , number of years you have been a tenant and type of house.

It gives the valuation, the discount and the price to you after discount.
I know this post is old, but my comment earlier was based on it not being clear if the aim was to buy A council house or THEIR council house. Obviously you cannot purchase a random council house, but if was THEIR house, then the first stop is obviously the council they are renting from.
I'm not sure either but it isn't the first time 888 has asked.
