I have seen the Daytime Running Lights going on and off at random on many newish cars. This must be a fault and the drivers are unaware. This fault could be a danger. Does anyone know if it is a recall issue or if any manufacturer has been to court over it? It affects Ford/VW/Peugeot as far as I've seen, (they must share the DRL control box).

Our three cars have them, they are all switchable, so could it be people playing around with them?

No, the ones I've seen go off each side separately, at random with no driver input.
They are set to come on when the driver indicates, to illuminate the intended route - it's not a fault.
You can't switch DRLs off on new cars (approved since Feb 2011). When you switch sidelights/headlights on they dim automatically.

The DRL goes out when the indicator on that side is operating so as not to mask the signal

I've just checked, you're right, I'd never noticed that from the driving seat.
I think Chiaroscuro is right, my observation is actually the fog light that comes on - mostly on VAG group cars.
BTW this only happens when the DRLs are situated in the light cluster. It doesn't happen when the DRLs are a string of LEDs positioned away from the lights.
I have DRL on my new car (Hyundai i10) Also, when I turn the wheel that side gets illuminated. I assumed it was for parking etc. ?
