Does anyone know a hand held vacuum cleaner which really does get cat hairs off upholstery.

no - hand held vacuum cleaners do not have enough power - hopeless.

My friend has a Golden Labrador ans she swears by her Dyson Animal, but they are pricey. I have the normal version (no pets) I think it's great no cords, very light and easy to manoeuvre.

I don't know how the cat is going to get his paw round that handle, Ellipsis!

(But yes, a Dyson is good for most beast hairs from most things in my experience - albeit, mostly dogs)
