Bob Marley is a given, also Sly & Robbie, Peter Tosh, early Aswad, Black Uhuru, Burning Spear, maybe UB40 (pre Labour of Love), Toots & The Maytals... that's all I can think of for now.

Happy skanking!

Other than those already stated by delboy3, you could have listen to ; LKJ, Bunny Wailer, Eek-a-mouse, Gregory Isaacs, Lee Scratch Perry, Luck Dube, MIghty Diamonds, Ini Kamoze, Skatalites, Steel Pulse, Dr. Alimantado, Dennis Brown, U-Roy, I-Roy....There's lots and lots of Reggae Samplers out there, start with those and see what you like. There are many strands of reggae, from Ska, Lovers' Rock, Roots, Toasters, Dance Hall, Dub etc.

Depends what you're looking for really but pesonally I would say Barrington Levy, Jah Cure, Luciano, John Holt, Sizzlah, Bounty Killah, Peter Tosh, Capleton, Elephant Man for funkiness.

I'm loving Jah Cure at the moment, if you can then down load the following tracks that I have in my stereo at the mo (oldies but goodies) and if you like them then you'll love the others:

Here I come (Broader than Broadway) - Barrington Levy

Too experienced - Barrington Levy (not the Ms Dynmite version)

Pluto Shevrington's 'Dat' is worth a listen, I love it.
Or you could buy a Trojan or Greensleeves compliation CD i got a 6 CD Trojan one from HMV last year and it was 10 and worth every penny!
In addition, and I can't believe anybody hasn't posted this, how about Jimmy Cliff?
Maybe a bit too "poppy" for some tastes!
REGGAE TOP TEN - Nicked from the Robert Elms page on the BBC Radio London website. A good primer! I've also found the staff in specialist Reggae record shops incredibly helpful and non-patronising over the years!

Not in any particular order.

Funky Kingston - Toots And The Maytals

Natty Dread - Bob Marley & The Wailers

Satta Massagana - The Abyssinians

Marcus Garvey - Burning Spear

Two Sevens Clash - Culture

The Harder They Come - Soundtrack

African Dub Chapter 3 - Almighty (Joe Gibbs)

Dread In A Babylon - U Roy

Blackheart Man - Bunny Wailer

Til Shilo - Buju Banton
Jock, I can't believe I missed Jimmy Cliff, bit poppy later on but man, what a fnckin' voice.
Hey, Chillum, you may have missed Jimmy Cliff, but you caught most of my other faves! Like u said where do you start, where do you stop! Some more honorable mentions... Prince Buster, Derrick Morgan, Laurel Aitken, Dennis Alcapone, King Tubby... (I used to hate dub, but learning to love it!)
