8d Note a cut in theatre producing surplus B?L?N?E. It looks like BALANCE but I can't parse and to me a balance isn't a surplus! Any help appreciated to parse. Thanks in advance. Will

Balance is what's left after reckoning
Balance - 'B' (note) + 'a lance' (cut in [operating] theatre)
